First Impressions
The Mossberg Patriot Tactical is available in 6.5 Creedmoor, .308, and 6.5 PRC, with barrel lengths matched sensibly to each calibre. The Creedmoor version tested here wears a 22-inch barrel – a good balance of velocity and handling – and weighs in at a manageable 7 lb 10 oz.
Straight out of the box, the rifle feels solid. The MDT polymer stock isn’t just there to look the part; it’s rigid, well thought out, and fully bedded with aluminium. The free-floated barrel stays that way even when clamped in tripod sticks, meaning there’s no point of impact shift to worry about.
Living With the Rifle
One of the Mossberg Patriot Tactical’s standout features is the adjustable cheek piece. Once freed from a rather generous helping of threadlock, it offers two inches of smooth vertical travel, and its slim profile tucks neatly under your cheekbone without forcing your head sideways. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference for consistent shooting.
The trigger is another pleasant surprise. It breaks at just over 1.1 kg (around 2.5 lb) and feels crisp and predictable. Combined with an 85 mm reach, it allows for a clean, perpendicular pull every time.
The Patriot’s bolt is a two-lug, 90° lift design with a fluted body. Yes, there’s a little bit of play at the rear, but it cycles smoothly once bedded in. The separate bolt head makes it easy to strip and clean, and feeding from the 10-round AICS-pattern magazine is reliable and fuss-free.
On the Range
Chris tested his Mossberg Patriot Tactical rifle with three Hornady loads:
- 120 gr ELD Match
- 140 gr ELD Match
- 143 gr ELD-X hunting ammo
All produced sub-MOA five-shot groups at 100 m. The point of impact stayed consistent even during 10-round strings, and there was no sign of thermal drift as the barrel warmed.
The rifle’s factory-fitted 20 MOA rail gives plenty of elevation for long-range work, and single-loading through the ejection port is smooth if you need a quick follow-up shot.
Where It Shines – and Where It Doesn’t
For a rifle retailing at around £285 in the UK, the Mossberg Patriot Tactical brings a lot to the table:
- Genuine sub-MOA accuracy with multiple factory loads
- Quality MDT stock with aluminium bedding
- Adjustable cheek piece that actually works in the real world
- Threaded barrel ready for a brake or moderator
- Capable of both precision target work and hunting
On the downside, there’s no rear bag hook, the cheek piece adjuster needed freeing off before use, and the bolt has a hint of play when open. But none of these are deal-breakers – especially at this price point.
Final Verdict
The Mossberg Patriot Tactical 6.5 Creedmoor is proof that an affordable rifle doesn’t have to feel cheap. It’s accurate, adaptable, and comfortable to shoot – and it’s not fussy about ammunition. Whether you’re looking for a starter precision rifle, a budget PRS option, or a hunting rifle with range capability, this one deserves a spot on your shortlist.
