When Merkel first introduced the Helix, it entered a market dominated by straight-pull heavyweights like the Blaser R8. Now, the Merkel Helix Speedster brings a fresh take to the genre – with its modular build, intuitive action, and ergonomic stock design, this rifle holds its own and then some.

STRAIGHT-PULL SIMPLICITY, MERKEL PRECISION
The Speedster’s core is its manual straight-pull rotary bolt, offering a notably short and swift action stroke thanks to a 2:1 internal gear ratio. It’s not just smooth – it’s fast, making it ideal for driven hunts or any dynamic shooting scenario.
A standout feature is the integrated Picatinny rail system, front and rear, which eliminates the need for expensive proprietary scope mounts. It’s a welcome change from other straight-pull rivals and a thoughtful nod to practical shooters.
“The action stroke is surprisingly short; it’s quite nice once you’re used to it,” said Pete Moore in his video review:

SMART ERGONOMICS WITH A TWIST
The Speedster’s stock is where the rifle earns its name. It borrows from thumbhole-style ergonomics but adds a vertical pistol grip and an adjustable comb with memory function – a rare feature that lets you set and reset cheek height with ease.
Though some might consider it “gimmicky,” Pete found that over time, the stock’s hybrid style provided excellent control, both offhand and from the bench.
“Honestly, this stock grew on me. At first I wasn’t sure, but now I really rate the design,” he states.
PERFORMANCE IN THE FIELD
Pete’s hands-on test of the Speedster in .308 Win delivered some standout accuracy – especially with Barnes TSX handloads, which grouped around half an inch at 100m.
However, heavier loads like 180gr S&B XRG were less consistent, reinforcing the rule: feed your rifle what it likes.
The adjustable trigger is described as “mushy but light,” offering room for personalisation, though not the crispiest break out of the box.
“You get the ammo right, and this rifle can shoot half-inch groups at 100m – no complaints there,” Pete enthused.
USER CONSIDERATIONS
- Cocking system: Similar to Blaser’s, it’s a bit stiff – standard for this rifle class.
- Barrel removal: Modular, but tight. A lever tool may help.
- Cleaning access: More limited than a bolt-action, but manageable with basic maintenance.
- Magazines: 3- and 5-round box mags available, easy to load and reliable.
Pete also notes that single-loading rounds without the mag is hit-and-miss, something to keep in mind for range use or quick reloads.
VERSATILITY & CALIBRES
Available in a wide range of calibres – from popular UK favourites like .243 and .308, to classic European rounds like 8×57 and 9.3×62 – the Helix Speedster can handle anything from roe to moose.
Barrel profiles include fluted semi-weight and standard 17mm options.
The barrel threading (15×1) makes it ready for moderators or brakes, and multiple finish and stock configurations mean the Speedster can be as elegant or tactical as you like.
FINAL VERDICT
If you’re looking for a rifle that combines straight-pull speed with modern usability, the Merkel Helix Speedster is a serious contender. It’s fast, flexible, and well-appointed – ideal for hunters who want the speed of a straight-pull with none of the compromise.
At around £4,000, it’s positioned against the likes of the Blaser R8 and Browning Maral. For Pete, a long-time Blaser fan, the Helix Speedster proved a pleasant surprise – and potentially a new favourite.
“Give me each one for a week and I might lean towards the Helix,” he concluded in his review.
